Your despatch No.216 of 9th September, 1949. Director of Education's Annual Report for 1947/48.
A separate reply will be sent on (b) of the despatch under reference. On (c) the explanation is as follows:-
#
The 3 Training Colleges listed under B of Annex 1 (page 48 of the Report) were:
2.
(a) Northcote Training College for training teachers for Urban Schools. As stated in paragraph 114 of the Report, the capacity of the College is 144 (two years of 72 each). However, owing to the shortage of suitable candidates the total number in training at the end of the period under review was 59 in paragraph 121.
as stated
(b) Rural Training College for training teachers for
Rural Schools. The number in training at the end of the period under review was 46 (22 second year less one who failed, and 25 first year) as stated in paragraph 129.
-
(c) Hong Kong Technical College. This does not train
teachers, but deals solely with technical education as set out in Chapter VII of the Report. The number in the College was 607, all males.
Teachers in training therefore numbered 105, of which 33 were male and 72 female. If to these are added the 607 students in the Technical College a total of 712 is obtained. (The difference from the figure of 713 in Annex 1 is the result of the departure of 1 student in the period between compilation of the statistical return from which the Annex was made and the writing of the text of the Chapters).'
